So, a little while back, I was on twitter, and I saw someone mention blogging at / about Bristol Fashion Week at the Mall Cribbs Causeway. I've been before with my mum a few years back, so I looked into it, then ended up talking to Claire, the PR & Comms Executive at the Mall (!), who got me and Billie free tickets and a blogging pass to Bristol Fashion Week, and today was the day we got to go.
(I will be posting outfit photos & polyvore sets soon, but here's the blogging part for now)
So, Bristol Fashion Week! We got there a little early - we had to overcompensate because I was driving, okay - which gave us time to look around and pass judgement on how cool everyone looked. Once we were in, we got some pretty decent seats and, looking like typical teenagers, got out the technology. Cameras, phones and tablet ahoy. I was a little bit nervous about taking pictures at the beginning, mainly because there were people with proper professional cameras and lenses there and I was just popping up every now and then with my camera and kit lens, but eventually I got to take some pretty decent photos.
If you'd said to me that the outfits I'd just seen were from John Lewis, I wouldn't have believed you, but they were and they looked fab. Every now and then it did kind of seem like the stylists had been given a theme and had to run with that, rather than having free rein, but overall there was a really good range of clothes for women. Although the majority of models were young, thin and conventionally pretty, there was one plus-size model, and another who was over 60 so it was nice to see those groups represented.
One theme I had particular issues with was lingerie: okay, it was from Ann Summers, I appreciate that maybe they don't cater to men's clothing as much, but here's what the women wore:
And the men?
Twitter definitely came in handy though, because the presenters came out after that and said they'd been reading the tweets backstage & agreed with us that either the men should've been wearing just as little as the women, or the women just as much as the men. (It was to be expected though. They did redeem themselves a little with a really nice androgynous suit a little later on, though.) There was also some pretty intense music going on for a lingerie catwalk.
Generally, BFW did really well with what they'd been given. They always have fun with it - the presenters keep everyone awake and engaged, and things like dance, ballerinas, themed sets and routines keep it all going. Because the Mall has a lot of well-established shops within it, the retailers and stylists have a huge range to work from, and by the looks of it, a lot of freedom in how they style the models. One really great thing that BFW does is pointing out the clothes featured in the shows: along with the handout on where each collection comes from, the "as seen in BFW" hangers make it a hell of a lot easier to find the outfit you've just seen on the catwalk without spending hours looking for it.
It was fun to go again, and I'm really grateful to Claire for arranging this and Billie for coming with.
